Dear Reader,
Wow! A special welcome to all of the new subscribers who have found me over the last month. I am so happy you are here.
Since there are so many new folks who have joined, I thought I would take a minute to introduce myself, or re-introduce myself if you have been here a while.
My name is Kristen, that is me giving a tour of Chinatown for newsletter subscribers (That’s You). ⬆️
I take the thought work out of finding things to do, see, and support in Los Angeles.
I have a website called This Ugly Beautiful City, now in its 10th year. It is a love letter to all the places that make Los Angeles a unique place to live, like the Museum of Jurassic Technology and the fantastic alternatives to corporate chains you should know about. (Amboy has my favorite cheeseburger.)⬇️
In This Ugly Beautiful City, you will find neighborhood guides, tips for tourists, and things I wish I had known when I moved to L.A.
I started Los Angeles Curated, the accompanying newsletter to my website, five years ago. Since that time, I’ve shared hundreds of things to do, see, and eat in Los Angeles. I’ve connected people who want to roller skate with skate hunnies, and taken people to the first winery to open in L.A. since prohibition. I’ve also given tours of Los Feliz and Chinatown and hosted paid-subscriber meet-ups at the Hammer and a French Dip Vs with Philippe's and Coles. (Coles is now closed.) I've also listed over 100 things to do in Los Angeles on a Budget.
My last newsletter issue on crafting was one of my most-read. Read that below. It also includes some subscriber itineraries.
About me
I am a former Minnesotan who has lived in L.A. for over 20 years. I’ve worked at art, culture, and education-based non-profits for all of my working life. Now, I am a travel curator who can help make visiting Los Angeles, or anywhere you want to go, come true. I connect people to small businesses, art & architecture, and the best bites at every budget, all over the world. (Right now, I am planning Rome, Florence, Scotland, and Montreal.)
I just shared over 140 things to do in Los Angeles in that text above.
What you will get as a subscriber
All subscribers will receive a short monthly list of things to do in Los Angeles, organized by theme. My poll for the next theme is below. You will receive occasional itineraries when they are released on the website, like this one: Book Crawl On The E.
Paid Subscribers
In my paid subscription, members will receive an additional curated list of things to do each month. Right now, I am creating a microsite for them of my favorite things to do in Los Angeles with a map. I also plan paid subscriber meet-ups and give first dibs/free access to my tours. (See below)
I am also excited to announce that I am adding a Reading L.A. Book Club to my paid subscription.
This is perfect for the year of getting to know your neighbors and taking a break from algorithms. These meet-ups you would start with something to talk about, your love, hatred, or meh feeling about the current book. You will also have the opportunity to explore a place mentioned or inspired by the book.
The book club is open to either the I'm a Fan and Get Out, or Do Stuff levels. I am giving away two gift cards to kick off our reading adventure.

The White Album, Joan Didion
Why: Didion is a chronicler of Los Angeles, and starting with a book of essays means people can join in the first month without the stress of finishing a novel in less time.
Activity: Yoko Ono’s first solo exhibit in Los Angeles at the Broad.
